Springfield Cardinals catcher Steven Hill has been promoted directly to the St. Louis Cardinals. Hill earned the call-up Tuesday night after backup catcher Jason Larue got a concussion from being kicked by Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto.

The 25 year old right handed hitting Hill was hitting .280 with a team high 22 home runs and 86 rbi’s for Springfield. Hill, who moved to fulltime catcher during the off season was named a Texas League All-Star earlier this summer

Congratulations to the Varsity Baseball Team winning the Gold Glove Varsity Tournament this past week-end. The Lobos beat Cy Ridge, Cy Lakes and Katy to advance to the finals Saturday against Cy Fair. The Lobos won the Championship game by the score of 5-4 in eight innings. Pitching was the name of the tournament as Hayden Jones, Blaine Tompkins, Logan Onda, Cameron Elliott and Brandon Montalvo pitched very well giving up only 8 runs the whole week-end.

Come watch the Lobos play tonight against Jersey Village at Langham Creek beginning at 6:00. They will be playing a Double-header.

The Sophomore Lobos baseball team took on an “old school” look as they honored Lobo baseball teams of years gone by with traditional gray pin-striped uniforms in their final game of the season. The traditional look served the team well as they won in convincing fashion, defeating the Cy-Lakes Spartans 22-1 to clinch the best record in district among the Sophomore teams. Jordan Clayton started on the mound for the Lobos and was dominating as usual, allowing just one run in four and one-third innings while recording 6 strikeouts. The defensive highlight for the Lobos came after a long Spartan hit in the second inning. A relay play from Joe Stearns to Darren Schroeder to Chris Dobsky made the final out of the inning and ended the last scoring threat for Cy-Lakes. Kyle McGee closed out the game in the fifth inning by getting the final two outs before the game was called due to the run-rule. The offensive outburst for the Lobos featured multiple hits from Jordan Clayton, Chris Dobsky, Connor Macalla, and Joe Stearns. Also contributing hits were Jason Casady, Tyler Ellison, Karl Metzger, Daniel Schiffner, and Luke Van Ness. However, the big hit of the afternoon for the Lobos was a long triple to left-center field from Michael Batista.

The Lobos Sophomore team finishes their season with a 19-7 record, 12-3 in district. As far as interesting statistics from the season, the Lobos outscored their opponents by a total of 100 runs. The team batting average was 3.50. The team on base percentage was .453 and the slugging percentage was .456. Finally, the Lobo pitchers combined for a team ERA of 3.71. Now it is on to summer baseball!

JV Lobos defeat Cy-Lakes 11-3 to go 14-2-1 in district play.

The JV Lobos Baseball team knew what they needed to do on Friday afternoon at Lobo Field, and they did it…THEY WON!

Cy-Lakes came in as the spoiler and got on the board early with a first inning run. That would be their last lead. The Lobos would score 6 first inning runs and never look back. Singles by Zack Moore, John Hoehner, Logan Onda (2 RBI’s) and Mitch Orsak (2 RBI’s) would get things started. Hunter Alston would also hit a ball to left field during the inning, that the Spartan fielder would misplay, allowing an additional two runs to score. A passed ball by the Spartans in the 2nd inning would allow the Lobos 7th run to score. Now 7-1, Lobos, going to the bottom of the third, John Hoehner would single driving in the Lobos 8th run, and another run would score on a bad throw to third by the Spartan catcher. In the 4th, Hunter Alston would hit a bomb to deep left center field to make it 10-1. Logan Onda would also single during the inning, but be left stranded. The Spartans would tack on two more runs in the top of the 5th on a Lobo throwing error, to make it 10-3 going to the bottom of the inning. Dom Eramo would single in the 5th and the Lobos would add one more run in the bottom of the that inning, to complete a 11-3 run rule victory and win the JV District Championship.

Logan Onda would get the start for the Lobos and be very sharp, giving up only one earned run and striking out 7. Cameron McCartney would enter and start the 5th inning, to finish out the game.

The JV Lobos ended the season with an overall record of 22-5-1, and 14-2-1 in district.

JV LOBOS ARE DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!

The Lobos Sophomore Baseball Team clinched at least a tie for the best record in district with a payback win over the Cy-Falls Eagles Friday afternoon. Jordan Clayton went the distance at pitcher for the Lobos, recording 8 strikeouts. Jason Casady had the big hit of the game for the Lobos with a long double. Darren Schroeder had two hits while Ryan McLennan, Chris Dobsky, Daniel Schiffner and Luke Van Ness each had a base hit for the Lobos. This one was a strange and exciting game highlighted by some unusual play in the infield, including the shortstop, Schroeder, tagging out an Eagles runner at the plate. Finally the game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Clayton drove in Schiffner with the game winning run to secure the Lobos victory.

Saturday’s game was a bit tougher and just as unusual as the Lobos went to Cy-Fair to face the Bobcats. In the first inning Darren Schroeder and Joe Stearns got back to back singles and the Lobos pushed across one run to take an early lead. Ryan Pinkerton started on the mound for the Lobos but he faced a tough attack as Cy-Fair answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the first. In the third and fourth innings the Lobos got hits from Jason Casady, Chris Dobsky, and Andrew Skrobarczyk, but they could not score. The Lobos were down by a 5-1 score when Eric Flores came in to pitch in the 4th. Flores threw 3 shutout innings and got some help via a great diving catch from Luke Van Ness in right field. In the 6th inning Casady doubled and Van Ness drove him in to cut the Cy-Fair lead to 5-2. Then in the 7th the Lobos rallied for 3 runs off of hits from Skrobarczyk and Schroeder. The Lobos had 2 more runners on base when a bizarre strikeout was called after only 2 strikes, ending the Lobos rally. Kyle McGee and Garrison Goessler pitched the 7th inning for the Lobos, but they could not send the game to extra inning as Cy-Fair scored one run to get the controversial win.

The Sophomore Lobos will have their chance to clinch solo possession of first place in their final district game, 4:30 Friday at Cy-Lakes.

The JV Lobos Baseball team beats Cy-Falls 3-2 in thriller… then shuts out Cy-Fair 4-0.

On Friday afternoon at Cy Falls High School, the JV Lobos Baseball team did what they have done most of this season….WIN! The Lobos put one run on the board in the 1st inning when Ryan Rand singled to score Zack Moore, who had walked earlier in the inning. Cy Falls would answer with a run of their own in the 2nd to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams would go scoreless in the third, but the Lobos would add another run in the 4th on two Golden Eagle errors to take a 2-1 lead. A single by Hunter Alston and two runners reaching on errors would highlight the inning. The game would stay scoreless until the bottom of the 6th when Cy-Falls would score another run to make the score 3-2. Matt Richardson would throw out a runner at third during the inning to preserve the 3-2 lead. The Lobos would go in order in the top of the 7th, and hold off the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the inning to take home a 3-2 win and earn their 20th win of the season.

Cameron McCartney would get the start Read the rest of this entry »
