The Lobos Sophomore Baseball Team clinched at least a tie for the best record in district with a payback win over the Cy-Falls Eagles Friday afternoon. Jordan Clayton went the distance at pitcher for the Lobos, recording 8 strikeouts. Jason Casady had the big hit of the game for the Lobos with a long double. Darren Schroeder had two hits while Ryan McLennan, Chris Dobsky, Daniel Schiffner and Luke Van Ness each had a base hit for the Lobos. This one was a strange and exciting game highlighted by some unusual play in the infield, including the shortstop, Schroeder, tagging out an Eagles runner at the plate. Finally the game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Clayton drove in Schiffner with the game winning run to secure the Lobos victory.
Saturday’s game was a bit tougher and just as unusual as the Lobos went to Cy-Fair to face the Bobcats. In the first inning Darren Schroeder and Joe Stearns got back to back singles and the Lobos pushed across one run to take an early lead. Ryan Pinkerton started on the mound for the Lobos but he faced a tough attack as Cy-Fair answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the first. In the third and fourth innings the Lobos got hits from Jason Casady, Chris Dobsky, and Andrew Skrobarczyk, but they could not score. The Lobos were down by a 5-1 score when Eric Flores came in to pitch in the 4th. Flores threw 3 shutout innings and got some help via a great diving catch from Luke Van Ness in right field. In the 6th inning Casady doubled and Van Ness drove him in to cut the Cy-Fair lead to 5-2. Then in the 7th the Lobos rallied for 3 runs off of hits from Skrobarczyk and Schroeder. The Lobos had 2 more runners on base when a bizarre strikeout was called after only 2 strikes, ending the Lobos rally. Kyle McGee and Garrison Goessler pitched the 7th inning for the Lobos, but they could not send the game to extra inning as Cy-Fair scored one run to get the controversial win.
The Sophomore Lobos will have their chance to clinch solo possession of first place in their final district game, 4:30 Friday at Cy-Lakes.
