“In life, there are times when you will need the love and strength of your family, and moments when you will rely on the kindness of friends.” For one special family, both are needed.
David Pruitt is a 38 year old History teacher and the Head Wrestling coach at Langham Creek High School. In 1997, David was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a condition where bone marrow does not produce sufficient new cells to replenish blood cells – red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. David beat aplastic anemia and has been in remission for 12 years. A couple of weeks ago, David went to the hospital for a check-up, and a his blood and bone marrow were examined. Based on the results, the doctors thought that the aplastic anemia may have returned. However, on Friday, April 13, they diagnosed David with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a form of Leukemia. He was admitted into MD Anderson Houston this past Tuesday for 5 days of intensive chemotherapy, which will be followed by many blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, battling of infections, possibly more chemotherapy, and ultimately a bone marrow transplant.
David’s wife, Ann, is a teacher at Ault Elementary and turned 40 the day before David’s diagnosis. They have 3 children, Andrew (17), Austin (9), and Avery (7). Their spirit, love, and faith have not been broken by this diagnosis. As parents their steadfast focus is on loving and caring for their children. We have the utmost faith in them as a family and know they will prevail but also know the journey ahead of them will be filled with challenges.
This is the message the David sent out on Facebook last Friday from the hospital after receiving the news.
“Good news/bad news. Bad news- my aplastic anemia has come out of remission and evolved to MDS (pre-leukemia). 5 days of heavy chemo in the hospital. Good news – I am going to kick it’s butt again. Still pretty early to know much else but please pray for my family especially Ann and the kids. It will be hard for the lil ones to understand and Andrew will have quite a large burden placed on his shoulders. Finally, pray for strength for Ann. She is as strong as they come but even she could use a bit extra. Love all y’all.”
We can all understand the financial strain that these situations bring to a family. With medical bills, treatment, daily medicine, the inability to work, gas to and from the hospital, parking, food, etc. the Pruitt’s need us. Therefore, an account has been established at the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union for those who would like to help. Donations can be mailed to:
